January- Winter theme

Updated: Jan 24, 2024

January starts a New Year after a crazy holiday season. I'm trying to reset and have a more organized life. I plan to have sensory bins and activities made out ahead of time so I can fit in learning and fun whenever I can. I work 3 days a week, full days but could do a sensory bin or activity if someone cancels or on a day I start later. At the bottom will be a list of items to have on hand for all the activities listed.

Holidays

1st Global Family Day

12th National Hot Tea Day

13th National Sticker Day

14th National Pizza Week

21st International Playdate Day

28 National Blueberry Pancake

Activities for those Holidays

Global Family Day- I love a Family Day. I think everyone is so busy all the time it's important to carve out special Family Time. It does help that everyone is off work/school for New Year's Day. We will be doing something as a family. I think a nice breakfast, maybe we'll go out for breakfast. We'll spend time together going to the zoo or Arboretum since we have memberships to both. It isn't often that I get to do things with both my boys and my boyfriend. We're always all going in different directions with work, school, and life. So a Family Day is on the books. works on being a family, not everything needs a speech goal

National Hot Tea Day- My little one doesn't have tea but playing tea party would be fun. It can all be pretend or you can have juice and cookies. It's nice to have some pretend play and some special time. works on new words

National Sticker Day- Stickers are good for fine motor. We have lots of different stickers and some reusable sticker books. You could make a letter or shape and have them put the stickers on the line. You can identify the stickers. With these reusable stickers, we can make a scene and name animals as pictured. works on following directions, identifying familiar items, use environmental sounds, requesting more,

National Pizza Week- Of course, I like to get into the kitchen with my little one. We will be making homemade pizzas for dinner. You can individual pizzas or they can help make a big family pizza. My little one loves to help make pizzas, we do it often. works Following directions, naming the food items.

International Playdate Day- Playing with other kids is so important. Kids with delays learn from their same-age peers, younger kids learn new skills from older kids and sometimes kids just learn things from other kids that they just can't get from adults. We love to try to do playdates with our friends on Fridays. When we officially start homeschooling playdates will be a must. It may be helpful that this day falls on a Sunday so hopefully, people will be off work and can make a playdate work. works on playing with peers, turn-taking,

National Blueberry Pancake- Of course, we're making pancakes. I often look for good food holidays just to give us an excuse to cook together. This can work on following directions, and counting the blueberries you put in. Following directions, counting, naming foods.

Activities

Obleck Melty Snow- Obleck is so easy 2 parts Cornstarch to 1 part water. It's white like snow and has such a cool texture. It can be a hit or miss with sensory kids though. I just did this last week with one of my clients and they loved it. They can help mix it up and it's just so cool to play with. works on following directions, and sensory play.

Snowman Art project- I got some snowman kits from Hobby Lobby. You put on the hat, scarf, and arms. We currently love snowmen so I know we will be making several snowmen this month. works on following directions, and identifying familiar items/body parts

Bring in clean snow- Get the snow playing fun without all the cold. Bring in clean, fresh snow for a sensory bin. You can make snowballs, and mini snowmen and not freeze outside.

Rice Sensory bin- We had a big bag of rice from Costco that my family didn't really care for so I used it for a Christmas sensory bin with Christmas pasta from Aldi. This month the pasta and Christmas stuff came out and some plastic snowflake vase filler went in with blue pompoms. You can sort of the snowflakes and pompoms and count them. Scooping and dumping is always fun. works on sensory play, sorting items, counting.

Snow Dough- I saw this recipe for snow dough and it looks so cute and is perfect for our winter theme. It has lotion so it is not a taste-safe dough if you are worried about them taking a lick. They can help make it and then play with it. works on following directions, sensory play,
