Let's get in the kitchen

An activity that is a little newer to me is getting the kids more involved with cooking. When I went in home I didn't really do anything in the kitchen, no cooking. I brought my toys and just did play. I recently co-treated with an OT that suggested doing a cooking activity and it was great. Cooking is part of a daily routine, even if the kids aren't usually doing it. Cooking can work on so many skills.
With child-safe knives, they can cut softer fruits or vegetables. I've found bananas, apples without the peel, oranges, and soft peaches are good to use. They will follow directions, label, count the pieces they make, and use action words like cutting. It's good because there isn't a wait time. They can eat it right away.

Last week actually one of my kids really wanted to make a smoothie and at first, Mom said "not now" but I encouraged it. It was great to have him follow the directions to put the spinach, avocado, and banana in the blender. He pushed the button and drank his creation. It could work on identifying the ingredients, counting the ingredients, following directions. It may help them to try new foods if they make it themselves.
Another cooking activity that is simple and little wait time is making instant pudding. Measure out the milk ahead of time so it's an easy pour for the little one. They enjoy stirring and you can switch off taking turns. You could put a 5 minute timer on while it completely thickens or if they can't wait it should be thick enough to eat a little right away.
Cooking can be so much fun if you have the patience and can handle a little mess.
