Things That Go Month

My Little guy is interested in everything that goes. He builds with blocks he tries to drive them around. He has tons of cars and train toys. He actually has a train toy from his birthday that isn't even open yet. He got a new Little People Construction site with construction trucks. So I thought why not build a theme around his interests? That's what is so great about homeschooling, you can make things directed toward their interests. So at home, we will focus on Things that go. I will also post on Instagram and Facebook some activities I do while I'm working in the Preschool, and their theme is summer. Honestly, I might take some of their theme ideas for June or July and do our own summer themes.

For the month I will have books with vehicles in them. I have a truck book with sliding doors and all different types of trucks. Our favorite book though is The Little Blue Truck. I will have vehicle puzzles. I like the Melissa and Doug vehicle puzzle that makes the vehicle sounds. Puzzles are something we are still working on and honestly, he doesn't have the longest attention for. Maybe the sounds puzzle will help keep his attention.

Right now we're working on putting 2 words together which seems to be the only expressive skill on the Rosetti for 18-21 months that he doesn't do yet. Receptively we're working on understanding the meaning of action words but I think we're almost there.

Things that go on land

Things that go on land would be cars, trucks, trains, and emergency vehicles. We have tons of cars and trucks so we'll be starting off fairly easy. We have a new ride-on push car to go for our walks in. We try to go for walks every day. We like to be outside as much as possible. He loves to point out every car on the street, in the driveway, or that he might hear. He loves when he hears a siren, we live fairly close to a hospital so some days it's pretty often. He's pretty good with his vehicle sounds but we'll play around with environmental sounds.

Sensory play- We will use cars that don't have batteries in a wash station. We will have two small bins, one with "dirt" and another with soapy water. This will be an outside activity and hopefully, we will have a nice day to do it.

Construction site

Since we just got a Little People construction site I thought that was great for things that go. We'll play with that and the construction trucks, picking up boulders and dumping the truck. My little guy already beeps when he backs up or if someone is in his way. We'll work on "go up, go down, go truck." Right now we're working on putting 2 words together which seems to be the only expressive skill for 18-21 months that he doesn't do yet. Receptively we're working on understanding the meaning of action words but I think we're almost there. We'll build with our blocks, using the dump truck to drive the blocks around.

Sensory play- My plan is to use the beans we have and put some dump trucks in there. I love my friend's idea of using coffee grounds as dirt but I feel like that may be a bit messy for our day to play sensory play at his age. Coffee grounds might be better for older kids. It smells amazing.

Things that go in the sky and in the water

For the last 2 weeks, we will combine things that go in the sky and in water. I'm combining sky and water because I felt like it just went together. In Chicago, we have the air and water show in the summer. This is our own Air and Water 2 weeks. There is enough to keep busy for 2 weeks and I didn't really want to split them up. We'll have a new water table so we'll play with boats hopefully it's nice enough but with Chicago weather, who knows? Doing it for 2 weeks, one week might be 80's and the other week rain and 40's. If can't play at our water table then in the bath. We will also play with our Little People Airplane. We will look for planes and helicopters in the sky when we play outside and on our walks.

Sensory play- We will try for an inside activity and an outside activity. Naturally, we will play with water. Like I said we will play at our water table when we can. For the sky though, we will have white cotton balls in our little sensory table for clouds and little planes.

The very last half week will be some time off. We will visit Grandma and Grandpa for Memorial Day and won't be doing anything too special there.

As usual, this is the plan and we'll see how it goes. I will post pictures of the activities on Instagram and Facebook. May will be busy while I finish up this short, part-time school position. June will hopefully slow down and I should be able to be more hands-on. A lot of times right now our sensory play is done with the sitter and I don't want big messes for her to deal with. She's great with looking at the themed books with him but I'll be happy to be the main "teacher" again.
